About Cleckheaton Sports Club
With over 500 full & 200 junior members we provide sport for over 200 players each week in winter & around 170 in summer.
Our clubhouse is open 365 days a year and is busy all year round. It is one of the most impressive in the region with a comfortable members’ bar and versatile function room able to accommodate 150 people.
Notable old boys who have played for the club have been England Captain Jeff Butterfield, England scrum half Roger Pickering, England and Lions winger John Bentley and England 2nd team centre Steve Burnhill. On the Cricket side we have sent a number of players to represent the county including the former Yorkshire captain and coach, Andrew Gale.
Our range of facilities ensure that we can cater for any event from Christening Parties to Funeral Teas, from Business Meetings and Conferences to Wedding Receptions – morning, afternoon or evening.
Our bar has an impressive range and has been awarded numerous CAMRA awards in the past few years and has Cask Marque accreditation. We have four regular hand pulled beers, three ciders and four lagers on draft with a great selection of bottled beers, wines and spirits. If you would like us to stock a specific drink, please let us know and we will do what we can to accommodate.
As well as active participation in our sports by the majority of our members, we have a vibrant bar and social scene with regular events, quizzes, dinners, as well as concerts and speaking events, speakers have included England cricketer Steve Harmison, England footballer Paul Merson and former World Snooker Champion Dennis Taylor.
Our enduring success is down to two simple factors, we are open and active all year round and are a multi-sport, all age club with players from Rugby Micros (under 6) to bowlers well into their 90s. We have a family friendly philosophy and are proud that so many of our top-flight players have come up though the junior ranks.

History of the Club
The constituent parts which became Cleckheaton Sports Club began in the late nineteenth century as two separate clubs: Hunsworth Mills Cricket Club began playing at Moorend in 1864 with the first facilities being built just a year later and changing its name in 1885 to Cleckheaton Cricket Club. Bowling was incorporated into the Cricket Club's activities in 1896 with the first green opening in 1897.
Cleckheaton Rugby Football Club first played in 1888 on a field adjoining the cricket field and rugby has been played there ever since save for two sizable gaps in chronology in the early twentieth century when its boys went off to fight in the two world wars. The Rugby Club elected to say within the brotherhood of the Union during the schism of 1895 hence its name Cleckheaton Rugby Union Football Club.
The two clubs operated separately but harmoniously for many years. With Cricket & Bowling being summer sports & Rugby being played in winter, the clubhouse for one was used as the changing rooms for the other with this being flipped as the sporting seasons changed in the spring and Autumn. However, it made sense to bring the two together and in 1972 after a trial period, the clubs merged to become Cleckheaton Sports Club.
Since the amalgamation the sports have gelled together well and our band of volunteers have worked tirelessly to build a successful club which has moved forward tremendously since these early days.
